Your Chapter Needs You!!!

A new creature has hit the endangered species list…Mascoma Chapter monthly meetings and seasonal fieldtrips.

For over twelve years the Mascoma Chapter of NH Audubon has held meetings, arranged for speakers, and sponsored field trips for our members and the public.  Attendance at meetings peaked during 2005-2006, when average attendance reached 29.

In addition to weekend field trips during the spring and summer we added the almost-too-popular Warbler Wednesday and Feathered Friday series of bird walks to follow spring migration at the same location for 5 weeks.

The number of participants at these events suggests that you appreciate them, and the Board has enjoyed organizing them. We have also given scholarships to young birders so they could attend birding and/or nature camps.

However…it’s become more difficult to coerce, bribe, cajole, and/or entice members (or anyone) to help with the organizing.  As a result, the “old hands” are getting tired, and are moving on to other outlets for their energies.  We need new blood to help keep our programs alive.

This means an opportunity for someone(s) to take over the planning and running of the meetings and fieldtrips.  Those interested are asked to email mascomabirds@yahoo.com.  The meetings require an hour or so each of planning and contacting speakers, and the fieldtrips require several hours organizing the spring peak of activity.  If we don’t find help these programs will go the way of the passenger pigeon…

And even if you are not prepared to volunteer your time, we’d like to hear any comments you might care to make about the Chapter’s activities over the past years…have you attended meetings and/or fieldtrips often?  Occasionally?   Is there still a need for this group given the other birding activities available in the area?  Please, let us know.

We're the Upper (Connecticut River) Valley chapter of the New Hampshire Audubon (NHA). In our chapter's case, the New Hampshire is a bit deceptive, since many of our members are from Vermont! Just to clear up possible confusion, NHA is not affiliated with the National Audubon Society.

Independent of the National Audubon Society, NHA has offered programs in wildlife conservation, land protection, environmental policy, and environmental education since 1914. The mission of New Hampshire Audubon is to protect New Hampshire's natural environment for wildlife and for people.

We have programs/meetings September through April on the first Weds of the month: some with guest speakers and some are council planning meetings. Programs are held in the Mayer Room at the Howe Library in Hanover, New Hampshire and start at 7 P.M.
